Most of our horses have been enjoying a nice rest over the winter. Some may be more reluctant than others to get back to work, but regardless, it’s spring the grass is growing and the horses feel GOOD. Even the old ones get a case of spring freshness now and then! So don’t hop on your horse expecting the quiet mount you hopped off of last fall. If your getting ready for that first ride of the year, give your horse the opportunity to get some of the excitement out of their system.
Lunging is a great way for them to get a few spring leaps out of the way before you climb aboard. A groundwork refresher can never hurt, it will be good for their minds and get them focused on the task at hand, and give them a chance to get some of excess energy out of their systems. It will also give you an opportunity to check everything over before that first ride. While lunging your horse make sure there’s no new stiffness in their gaits and that your tack still fits as good as it did last year. Be observant and watch for any discomfort. If all is well with your horse and they’ve had an opportunity to focus and warm up, hit the trails and have fun.
Happy riding!
