Training & Board

TRAINING

ELS Equine can provide training services starting horses, putting miles on, finishing or refreshing your horse's training. Emmy-Lou uses a very quiet natural approach to riding, employing the physics and the mind of the horse to accomplish any goal.

A little about how I train:

I put a lot of time and emphasis into my groundwork with the horse, I believe solid groundwork is the foundation for a good riding horse, and it is something that can always be revisited if there are ever problems in the future. I recognize that all horses are different and some need more time than others, it's important to me that the horse understands the concept completely, before moving on to the next step, as moving forward with 'holes' in their training can cause huge problems in the future. Being thorough sometimes takes a lot of time, but it's worth the reward.

When working on the ground I use my voice often, I find it helps horses make the connection between my body language on the ground, and body language from the saddle. Creating a calm, well mannered horse who is trusting and willing is most important to me, fine tuning and training for a specific discipline can come later. I believe, that a well rounded horse with solid basics can go in any direction. Of course, if an owner has already decided what the horse's future will hold, ie speed events, shows, etc. training can be tailored so that this particular horse is best prepared for his particular future.

Working with already broke horses to take them further than they are is always wonderful, it never ceases to amaze me what a horse can do when he is asked the right way. Horses who have devoloped habits or quircks are usually 'figured out' by finding the 'hole' or inconsistency in their past training. Often taking a step back (or several) or simply changing our method of 'asking' will help the horse understand what we want (or don't want) him to do.

All in all, I truly believe that time and good communcation is the key to accomplishing anything, most horses move along nicely, and then there's the odd horse who just needs more time. I believe that there is hope for every horse, and that consistency, time, and a patient hand will always do the trick.
